By Press Trust of India: Senior Tripura Congress leader Pijush Kanti Biswas on Wednesday joined the Trinamool Congress in New Delhi, a party statement said. Elections to the 60-member House in Tripura are likely to be held early next year.
The former Tripura PCC chairperson, along with several other Congress leaders from the northeastern state, joined the TMC at its party office in the national capital in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, it said.
A party leader said Biswas is likely to be appointed as the state president of TMC in Tripura. Other Congress leaders who were inducted into TMC are Tejen Das and Ananta Banerjee, former general secretaries of Tripura PCC, former working president of state Congress Purnita Chakma and ex-general secretary of Tripura Youth Congress, Samarendra Ghosh.
Welcoming the senior leaders into the party’s fold, TMC’s Tripura unit tweeted, “Our family strengthens. With an aim to work for the betterment of Tripura, former INC State President Pijush Kanti Biswas joined our Trinamool family today. We wholeheartedly welcome him to our party.” Mamata Banerjee said, “I welcome you all to the TMC.”
Abhishek Banerjee said, “We will together fight the BJP’s misrule in Tripura and the terror unleashed by saffron forces in the state.” The TMC is trying to expand its footprint in the northeastern state and had contested the civic polls last year, garnering over 16 per cent vote share.
