Men, women separated by cloth attend class on LGBTQIA+ in Kerala

Students from the Thrissur Medical College participated in the session on “Understanding LGBTQIA+ from an Islamic perspective” organised by the Mujahid Wisdom group on July 6.

The event has drawn massive criticism on social media

A class on gender politics in Kerala has left social media users amused with its blatant irony. Photos from the session showed students – men and women – being addressed by Dr Abdullah Basil, the leader of the student wing of an Islamic organisation in Kerala, separated by a curtain.

Students from the Thrissur Medical College participated in the session on “Understanding LGBTQIA+ from an Islamic perspective” organised by the Mujahid Wisdom group on July 6.

The classes were taken by Dr Abdullah and Suhail Rasheed, who are the leaders of the student wing of the Mujahid Wisdom group and admins of a Facebook group – Unmasking Atheism.

The event has drawn massive criticism on social media from users asking how the students, who took an oath to treat people without any gender discrimination, took part in the sessions.

Officials of the college union confirmed that the event was not organised by the administration or the students’ union. It was organised near a place of worship close to the campus by a religious organization, they said.

Abdullah, in a Facebook post, clarified the same and justified the action. In another Facebook post, he drew comparisons between religion and liberalism in gender segregation.

There is a separate entrance and prayer room for men and women in mosques, he said, adding that the curtain in between will not come as a surprise to followers of Islam.
