By Shibimol KG: Amid the Congress-led UDF’s agitation against the “arrogant” approach of the LDF government over a number of demands put forth by it, the Kerala assembly was on Tuesday adjourned sine die, much ahead of its original schedule of March 30.

When the Question Hour began, opposition leader VD Satheesan said that five opposition MLAs, including a woman MLA, would start an indefinite strike inside the Assembly. Following that, Speaker AN Shamseer announced the culmination of the 21-day-long eighth session of the 15th Kerala Assembly. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the resolution for this. Bills were passed without any discussion.

The Opposition said until two demands of theirs – 1) to withdraw the case registered against the Opposition for the ruckus created outside the Speaker’s office; 2) to take a decision on the adjournment motions rejected by the Speaker in the session – are met, the strike will continue.

Speaker AN Shamseer noted that this was not the right procedure and an insult to Assembly procedures. Minister MB Rajesh said that the Opposition is challenging the parliamentary proceedings and violating the rules.

VD Satheesan said that the government was taking a step not to consider the demands of the Opposition. “We demanded the rule 50 notice for the adjournment motion which all the Opposition in Kerala have enjoyed for several years. But one morning, the chief minister declared that from now, we would check the content of the motion. We cannot allow that.”
