Cyclone Asani: Heavy rains batter Andhra’s Krishna, Visakhapatnam districts | Pics and videos

Cyclone Asani moved close to the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday morning though the severe cyclonic storm weakened into a cyclonic storm. Andhra Pradesh issued a ‘red’ warning for the coast. Nine teams of both SDRF and NDRF have been deployed for relief operations.

The cyclone triggered heavy rains in several places across the state. The capital city of Visakhapatnam received heavy rains as the storm approached Andhra coast.

The cyclonic system 40 km south of Andhra’s Machilipatnam. It is likely to move nearly northwards for next few hour and recurve slowly north-northeastwards and emerge into westcentral Bay of Bengal off north Andhra coasts by night, the IMD said. It is likely to weaken gradually into a depression by May 12.

Storm surge owing to the cyclonic storm is likely to inundate low-lying areas of Krishna, East and West Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh, the weatherman has predicted.

The Met Department has warned fishermen against venturing into the deep sea till Thursday, as Odisha and West Bengal braced for heavy rain.


IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra in Bhubaneswar said that Cyclone Asani is gradually weakening. “After nearing the Andhra Pradesh coast in the evening, the system will change its course and move off and along the Odisha coast,” he told PTI. Light to moderate rainfall lashed Puri and Khurda, while very heavy downpour is likely to occur in some places in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Odisha.

As many as five fishing boats capsized in high waters near Odisha’s Chatrapur in Ganjam district, but all 65 fishermen swam ashore. The incident took place after a boat capsized and it hit four other fishing boats, causing all the vessels to sink, an official told PTI.

Flight services to and from Visakhapatnam airport have been cancelled in view of Cyclone Asani. While Indigo cancelled 23 of its services, other operators like Air Asia and Air India have also suspended their services. While, six trains were cancelled while one was rescheduled in view of Cyclone Asani.
