What Is a “Smart Home”?

This concept refers to the automation of living space, thanks to which all everyday tasks (or part of them) related to living are solved without human intervention. For the first time, the ideas of creating such a system began to appear at the beginning of the 20th century, simultaneously with the widespread electrification and the appearance of the first models of household appliances familiar today – vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerators, toasters, temperature-controlled irons, etc.

The first smart home management systems were developed and implemented back in the 50s and 60s of the last century. In the 70s, the standard for managing home devices X10 was developed in the USA – at the same time, a relatively inexpensive automation system was released to the market, which became quite widespread. In the following years, there was a gradual development of this technology not only in the USA and Europe but also in Asian countries (primarily Japan and South Korea). A special role in this was played by the emergence and widespread use of smartphones and tablets, with which control over home systems became as comfortable as possible.

Today, this term means a unified system of automated control of household devices, organized at the level of a home LAN.

What Does a “Smart Home” Include?

In the most general form, a home automation system consists of three main categories of components:

  • Control devices. Controllers (hubs) control the system (receiving and processing signals, issuing commands) in automatic mode according to user-defined settings. Depending on the configuration of the system, there may be one or several such control devices – in the second case, they are also connected to each other and connected to a common terminal, the role of which can be performed by specialized equipment or a home PC.
  • Sensors. The purpose of these devices is to control the state of the environment (living space). They register changes in its characteristics (for example, temperature, humidity, presence of movement, pressure in the heating system, etc.) and send appropriate signals to the controller, which, after processing them, issues control commands aimed at bringing the housing parameters to the set ones or notifying the user of a possible danger.
  • Executive devices. The most numerous group of devices whose task is to perform a certain action when the controller sends a control command. Actuators include circuit breakers and sockets, sirens, shut-off valves, air conditioners, ventilation systems, etc.
  • Additional equipment. For the smooth operation of the entire system and its individual elements, it is necessary to ensure their reliable communication with each other. For this purpose, routers, autonomous device power supplies, network distributors, communication cables, wireless communication devices, etc. are used.

The smart home system works as a single local area network. All devices are connected to each other via wired and/or wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.) channels. At the same time, much attention is paid to data encryption, which prevents hackers from hacking equipment, for which manufacturers use generally accepted or specialized security protocols.
