Essential Steps to a Successful Kitchen Renovation

The kitchen today in almost every apartment or house performs many functions. Here people cook food, have lunch and dinner, gather with the whole family, and invite guests. Therefore, even the smallest kitchen should be comfortable, cozy, and convenient, and this depends on the quality of the repair work, the choice of finishing materials, and the location of furniture and appliances.

Many of us today prefer to renovate the kitchen once it’s not in a good shape. Then the question comes: what are the main stages of kitchen repair, and in what sequence it is necessary to perform all the work.

Carrying Out the Necessary Measurements

To create a kitchen design project, and calculate the number of materials needed, you first need to know with great accuracy all the parameters of the room. First of all, the width, length, and height of the room are measured, then the dimensions of the window and door openings, as well as the distance from them to the floor and ceiling, adjacent walls. It is also necessary to measure the mezzanine if any.

In addition, they measure the location of all existing outlet groups, water supply, and sewerage outlets, ventilation vents. One of the common kitchen planning mistakes people make is not taking the right measurements before the design of the project or not having a clear frame of mind, regarding what furniture or appliance they want with what measurements.

Creation Of a Design Project

Many people skip this stage, believing that they are already able to keep all the details in their heads. Frequent results of such oversight are the inability to place some piece of furniture or appliances in the kitchen, the inharmony of color combinations, the inconvenient arrangement of lamps, sockets, etc. That is why all the details need to be thought out in advance, and they should be reflected in the design project of the kitchen.

Preparatory work

Under the preparation of the kitchen for the repair, they mean cleaning it and freeing it from the old finishes, furniture, and appliances. It all starts with the removal of appliances and furniture from the kitchen, then we dismantle the ceramic tiles, and remove the baseboards, and the flooring.

Whitewashing from the ceiling is not so easy to remove, so you have to spend a lot of effort washing the surface. The same applies to painted walls: in this case, a special paint thinner helps in the best way. It must be handled with extreme caution, wearing a respirator, protective clothing, and goggles. Old wallpaper can be removed with a spatula, first,it can be slightly wetted with cool water.

Wiring

Installation of electrical wiring is carried out taking into account all points of electricity consumption, they also equip and redo, if necessary, the water supply and sewerage system. They start with electrical wiring, for the arrangement of which three-wire double-insulated cables with a diameter of 2 mm are needed. The walls are ditched in the necessary places in order to then lay the cable there, then the wire itself is fixed with masking tape and gypsum. Cables are laid only at right angles. At this stage, you need to clearly know the kitchen lighting scheme and the location of outlets.

Window Installation

After installation of all communications, window replacement is performed, if necessary. After installing a new window, it is hidden from possible contamination during further repair work with a plastic film and masking tape. In principle, the window can be installed before all communications are carried out – this is not so important.

Rough Finish

At this stage, all surfaces are leveled and prepared for subsequent fine finishing. The ceiling must be puttied, cleaned, and primed. If its surface is so uneven that it will take a lot of time and effort to put it in order, it is better to think about a system of suspended or stretch ceilings. In this case, you just need to eliminate the largest defects, such as loose plaster.

Final Finishing

When all communications are installed, you can proceed to the finishing work. It is better to start from the ceiling so that later you do not get dirty during the finishing of the walls and floor. For facing the ceiling, you can choose a painting, a system of stretch, or suspended ceilings using drywall or slats. It is highly undesirable to use whitewash because it will turn yellow very quickly. Stretch ceilings are an exception, their installation is carried out after finishing the walls, as this is a quick and completely non-dirty process.

Conclusion

In order to complete the kitchen renovation on time, invest within the allotted budget, and, as a result, get a stylish, comfortable, and harmonious space, it is very important to create a kitchen design project, and clearly define every little thing in this room and follow the plan. Some work should still be entrusted to professionals, even if it is decided to do the repair yourself. Clear planning, in the end, will help save time and create a flawless kitchen.
