The Matrix

This 1999 movie is the grandfather of Cyberpunk movies. It’s the story of a hacker who discovers that his world is actually a computer simulation designed by machines to keep people in line. The Wachowskis went on to make two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, after making this film.

Blade Runner

Set in a future Los Angeles where humans and robots called replicants coexist, the film follows Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a “blade runner” who hunts down rogue replicants that have escaped from an off-world colony.

Ghost In The Shell

This movie is set in 2029 Japan, where people can have cybernetic implants, giving them enhanced abilities. In an era dominated by technology, there is a mysterious hacker known as “The Puppet Master” who is on the run from Japanese authorities. His mission: to take over everyone’s minds.

Altered Carbon

In this sci-fi thriller, people in a postapocalyptic future have the ability to transfer their minds between bodies, which are known as “sleeves.” A political rebel accused of murder is brought back from the dead to solve a mystery.

Minority Report

This movie takes place in 2054, where technology has advanced so far that crimes can be predicted before they even happen. In this world, a special police force called Precrime is tasked with stopping crimes before they happen. Tom Cruise plays the head of Precrime, who is forced to go on the run when he’s accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

The Terminator

In this 1984 action-adventure film, Schwarzenegger portrays a cyborg sent back in time to assassinate Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the mother of a resistance leader who will save humanity in the future.

AKIRA

This OG 1988 movie takes place after World War III, where Tokyo has been rebuilt as Neo-Tokyo. Tetsuo Shima (Nozomu Sasaki) is a close friend of Kaneda’s (Mitsuo Iwata). An evil government agency called the ESPER Project gives Tetsuo Shima (Nozomu Sasaki) with enormous psychokinetic powers.
