Toyota India is all set to unveil its new midsize SUV (Codename: D22) in India on July 1, 2022. This new SUV is jointly developed by Suzuki in India and there will also be a version of Maruti Suzuki (Codename YFG) that will see the light of day a little later.

The automaker has sent out ‘block your date’ invite for the media promising a “big announcement” on July 1, 2022, and we think it is likely to be for the unveiling of the new mid-size SUV. According to various reports, this new mid-size SUV is expected to be called the Toyota Hyryder but the company has not officially confirmed the name yet.

As previously mentioned, this new SUV is jointly developed by Suzuki and Toyota as part of its global partnership. The two all-new upcoming SUVs in India will be based on a new architecture which is based on the modular DNGA platform sourced from Daihatsu. The DNGA platform has been engineered especially for emerging markets and is used for several Toyota and Daihatsu vehicles in international markets.

The upcoming mid-size SUV from Toyota and Suzuki has been spied various times testing on Indian roads. The main highlight of this SUV is the hybrid engine. Both of the SUVs are expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine from Maruti with slight tuning. This engine will be mated with an electric motor that further improves the performance and the efficiency.

The 1.5-litre K15B Petrol engine which is likely to be used is already powering various Maruti and Toyota models such as Vitara Brezza, Eritiga, XL6, S-Cross and Toyota Urban Cruiser. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

The new Toyota Hyryder will take on established players in the segment such as Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun. The SUV is expected to come with premium appeal and features such as connected car tech, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, touchscreen infotainment system, sunroof and many more.

When launched, the new mid-size SUV competes with Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and MG Astor. We expect the new SUV to be priced from Rs 10-18 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new mid-size SUV will be manufactured at Toyota’s second manufacturing facility in Bidadi, Karnataka.
